Mads Nissen won the first prize at the 2020 edition of POY – Pictures Of The Year for the daily life category, with this picture taken in Cape Town, South Africa on assignment for Politiken. South Africa’s second largest city is plagued by crime and drugs. Twenty-five years after the fall of apartheid, the country has set a number one world record in inequality, and Cape Town has become one of the most dangerous cities in the world with raging gang-wars in the neglected townships. Mads also won an “award of excellence” in the Daily Life picture story for his reportage, accomplished for Politiken “Planting seeds in peaceful soil”.
André Liohn won instead the second place in the Impact 2019–Immigration Status category. This photograph, taken on assignment for the The Wall Street Journal portrays a Nigerian migrant detained in the Tajoura Detention Center for migrants outside Tripoli, Libya on August 6th, 2019.
